De Gea is said to be worried about his prospects at Manchester United following the farcical collapse of his £29million move to Real Madrid and Van Gaal had axed him because of the uncertainty over his future.
The goalkeeper is anxious about losing his position as Spain's No.1 ahead of Euro 2016 and coach Vicente Del Bosque has told him he must play for United.
United have dismissed reports in Spain that De Gea will continue to be ostracised by Van Gaal and insist his his first-team chances are not linked to his refusal to sign a new deal.
"Those reports are absolute rubbish, the team will always be picked s olely on merit," said a United spokesman.
De Gea has 10 months left on his United deal and the club's offer of a new £200,000-a-week agreement remains on the table.
However United do not expect De Gea to have a change of heart and pledge his future to Old Trafford when he is so keen to return to his native Madrid.
